Elias Amezaga

Playwright

His plays such as Señorita Jairo, Escorial, and La Escuela de los bufones have been staged in Spain as well as in Latin America. In Madrid, he introduced the plays of Arthur Adamov, Bertolt Brecht, and Maurice Druon, and also several works by the Flemish playwright, Michel de Ghelderode, known for his theatre of cruelty, and most of which has been translated by Elias Amezaga. Elias Amezaga's books about Chopin and Van Gogh have been adapted into plays for Spanish television. El Proceso de María Estuardo was adapted for Radio Nacional. He also created plays for children. The experimental theatre troupe, Los Cátaros, has performed his play Espantajo. El Hereje was staged at the University of Ponce in Puerto Rico. And the theatre group, La Compañía Lope de Vega, has enacted his play Redentor del Mundo in several countries. He left the theatre however, after experiencing some setbacks at the erstwhile Beatriz theatre in Madrid with his play El Inventor de la Luna. Yo, Demonio, his play about the adventures and misfortunes of the sixteenth century conqueror Lope de Aguirre, has yet to make a debut.

According to the late Francisco Yndurain, "his theatre pieces, with their sophisticated scenery and, even in some instances, with the most audacious form of presentation, I believe deserve a special place in modern theatre, and although some have regarded them as absurd, this is not to be taken as a form of rejection, but rather as a definition of his style". This is the situation of an author who has dedicated all of his life to writing. And, this is the case of Elias Amezaga who has devoted his entire existence to his work. He has lived for his work and, in turn, his work has guided him every step of the way - working in seclusion in his library-tower home surrounded by mountains and isolated from the world, with only occasional escapes to visit scientific centers in order to obtain information and data for his creations.
